HEEDING THE DIVINE CALL: FAITHFUL ACTIONS FOR A SUSTAINABLE EARTH

7 de September de 2023 | COMMUNITY OUTREACH, Editorial, Featured, Stories

Throughout the world today, there is legitimate concern for caring for our planet and maintaining a sustainable Earth. We have all seen and heard in the news about concerning temperature and climate changes. For some time now, these changes have resulted in torrential rains, devastating droughts, excessive heat, and hurricanes, among other calamities.

As believers in God, we see the ongoing climate events as a reminder of one of our main duties. We are to take care of the Earth, the home God has given us for the duration of our lives. The heavens are the heavens of the Lord; “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s;
But the earth He has given to the children of men.” (Psalms 115:16. NKJV).

Regarding the responsibility of men in caring for the earth, Genesis 2:15 tells us: “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”

The word of God makes it clear that man’s duty is to diligently care for the heavens and the earth: the air, rivers, seas and lakes of the planet, avoiding environmental pollution that degrades the health of humans and beings alive.

Embracing Sustainability: A Community Approach to Reducing Waste and Fostering Environmental Responsibility

Maintaining a sustainable Earth requires us to think, act, and live differently. This change starts little by little from our homes and in our congregations. Being aware of the amount of garbage we generate is essential. We all must strive to reduce the 13 million tons of plastic dumped into the oceans each year. Paying attention to the authorities’ recommendations on recycling garbage and waste is also crucial.

Each community of faith in The Light of The World has undertaken the task of replacing disposable glasses and plates with reusable ones. Additionally, these communities are working on reforestation projects and the rescue and sanitation of public spaces. They clean parks and gardens, develop vertical green walls, and foster a culture of sustainable responsibility.

There is much to do, but small changes are underway. These changes aim to improve the way we live and utilize creation. The possible applications of these changes depend on our living environment and individual freedom.

Faithful Actions for a Sustainable Earth

The Lord taught us to live wisely and instructed us so that we may have long life, and that it may be abundant. God put us on this Earth to take care of it, protect it and enjoy it. It is a task that we must do responsibly.

September 7 is the “International Day of Clean Air for a Blue Sky,” established in 2019 by the United Nations General Assembly. We can join others to contribute to a cleaner environment and a sustainable Earth.
